PHIXER for Bandcamp / indie release phone mono fold
Studio headphones can feel huge while the same Bandcamp master thins in the Bandcamp player, on a phone speaker, or after a quick mono-ish preview. Upload encode, browser player fold, and a tiny mono-ish driver eat bass, side beds, and vocal body. Practical habit for indie releases: check with PHIXER before upload. Free phase-repair helps after polarity and timing. It is not a Bandcamp encoder, not a loudness tool, and not a substitute for a true mono listen on a phone.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not a Bandcamp uploader, not a time-aligner, not a stereo widener, and not a substitute for polarity, delay matching, or a real mono / phone-speaker / Bandcamp-player check. Use it after hygiene, when residual spectral cancellation remains on a stereo bed you must keep stereo through Bandcamp upload, preview, and phone playback. Check with PHIXER before you upload the release.
Three Bandcamp / indie-release collapse modes
- Bandcamp player / browser fold. Fans often preview in the on-page player before they buy. Mute wide FX briefly and re-check fold in the real Bandcamp player, not only in your DAW headphones.
- Phone speaker / pocket fold after upload. A master that sounds huge in the studio can soft-drop when a buyer previews on a phone. Habit: true L+R sum on the stereo bounce before you upload.
- Apple Music / Spotify / mastering cousins. Streaming beds on phone speakers and master-bus mono-check share the same L+R habit. Cousins: PHIXER for Apple Music / Spatial vs phone mono · PHIXER for Spotify / streaming phone mono · Where PHIXER sits in a mastering chain.
Fast Bandcamp / phone-mono audition (about 60 seconds)
- Sum L+R on the master / stereo bounce bus. Listen to vocal body, bass, and side beds.
- A/B stereo vs mono. Note what disappears on fold: S and SH consonants, kick thump, wide pads under the hook.
- Upload a private / draft track or play the bounce on a phone speaker. Open the Bandcamp player preview. Mute wide FX / Haas / side-heavy verbs. Note which path thins the preview fold.
- Re-check fold after any limiter / loudness / encode pass, not only before cleanup. Still check with PHIXER before upload if residual L/R fights remain. Habit: mono compatibility checklist.
Honest order of fixes (before spectral phase rotation)
1. True mono / L+R listen plus Bandcamp player preview
Hard L+R sum on the master / stereo bounce. Then preview in the Bandcamp player and on a phone speaker. Habit: mono compatibility checklist and the 60-second audition above. Bandcamp preview vs mono is not the same listen as headphones-only.
2. Polarity if a path flips
Dual mics, stacked stems, dual-path beds. Flip polarity when body returns. Guide: polarity vs phase.
3. Timing / delay-align before spectral tools
Nudge dual mics, stacked takes, and wide beds a few ms. Spectral rotation is not a substitute for timing.
4. Prefer correlated voice and lows for Bandcamp preview and phone speakers
Keep critical voice and low-mid correlated. Put width in sides that survive fold. Related: Apple Music / Spatial phone mono and Spotify / phone mono.
5. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights
If a stereo bed must stay stereo and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B on a phone, not only in cans. Place it after EQ/compression and before the limiter when you master for Bandcamp. Watch the YouTube tutorial and the mono demo. Mastering placement: Where PHIXER sits in a mastering chain. Check with PHIXER before upload.
Bandcamp path types
| Setup | Common mono failure | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Bandcamp on-page player preview | Master loses body in the browser player | Hard mono bounce; check in the real Bandcamp player |
| Phone speaker after upload | Buyer preview soft-drops on a phone | True L+R on the stereo bounce before release |
| Wide pad / Haas under the hook | Swish or cancel on fold | Less width in lows; correlated center |
| Dual-path vocal / stacked takes | Body gone when both play | Polarity then timing |
| Limiter / encode pass after mix | Fine in headphones, thin after upload | Re-check fold after limiter / encode, not only before |
| Mastering chain placement | Phase after limiter is too late | Mastering chain guide |
| Apple Music / Spotify cousin | Streaming on a phone speaker thins the same way | Apple Music · Spotify mono |
Apple Music, Spotify, and mastering cousins (short version)
- Apple Music / Spatial fold-back and Spotify / streaming playlist fold on a phone speaker share the same L+R habit as Bandcamp upload / preview mono.
- On a master bus, place phase repair after EQ/compression and before the limiter or clipper. Guide: Where PHIXER sits in a mastering chain.
- Polarity and timing still come first. Spectral tools after residual L/R fights only. Check with PHIXER before upload.

When not to reach for PHIXER
- Wrong polarity on dual mics or stacked stems (flip polarity first).
- Obvious attack misalignment (nudge first).
- You only need a mono print, not a stereo bed that must survive Bandcamp preview and phone fold.
- Bandcamp upload / encode / merch-page problems (wrong tool).
- Loudness, LUFS, or stream-encoder problems (wrong tool).
- Honesty list: When not to use PHIXER.
